MT 2K21 is officially out today, but I just got my entire review copy yesterday morning, so this review in progress will spill over into next week (following the Labor Day weekend). However, I managed to devote a decent number of hours yesterday, and at that time NBA 2K21 has made it crystal clear that it has maintained the franchise's record of leading on-court gameplay. The majority of the updates are comparatively small, like loose rebounds feeling and looking a lot more realistic, however they also help add to an already strong base. The very best aspect of NBA 2K21 so much is that the control tweaks, such as the new aim meter, make for an all-new learning curve. Unfortunately, upgrades to the surrounding game modes appear fairly barebones.
The aim-meter mechanic is actually difficult to grasp, but has already led to some really gratifying one-on-one isolation victories. It is nice having the ability to use the right stick exclusively as a dribbling tool until I'm ready to pull back for a shot. The ability to size-up, which can be tied to special dribbling animations for many of the top players in the league, and isolate is far better than ever. I spent a couple of hours experimenting with different playstyles, like facilitating the pick-and-roll using Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. It's tremendously rewarding to utilize Doncic's size and footwork to create space - something that I could not replicate with other guards around the group, such as Seth Curry. While it's not completely new, NBA 2K21's capability to entertain gamers' playstyles is outstanding this season.
That said, there are a few frustrating gameplay issues I've come across, also. Fastbreaks seem slightly improved, but participant spacing is still clearly off. For example, even my finest three-point shooters will monitor inside the three-point line on fast breaks when they'd be better off finding space in the corner. In general, it seems like NBA 2K21 has not completely adapted to the accent modern NBA basketball has put on the three-point line. Quick catch-and-shoots are not as common as they should be, and closing out remains far too easy on defense.
Similarly frustrating is that the CPU's capacity to create problems for itself. In my short time with NBA 2K21, I have already seen two backcourt violations on wide-open inbounds passes. It functioned as a jarring reminder that I was not, in actuality, experiencing Buy NBA 2K MT a true game of NBA basketball.
